The characters in a moving story are known by what they do, not merely what they say. Their actions convey what they believe and what they value.
So rather than merely telling you about myself, I invite you to explore what I make. Hopefully in the process you will discover what I am about.
Before graduating high school I knew I wanted to make films, but I didn't have the connections or resources at the time. I figured I'd buy a still camera to practice visual storytelling. My reputation among my friends quickly outgrew my talent, and people started calling me a photographer long before I knew what I was doing.
I once made the mistake of telling my mom I was going skydiving rather than telling her I went skydiving. Big difference. The point is: I love adventure, and I can't help but share it with others. I'll take adrenaline over caffeine any day. My shoe collection contains more specialty footwear than normal shoes (e.g. hiking boots, ice skates, scuba flippers, climbing shoes, etc.) Nature is my sanctuary. Adventure is my song.
Most of my work involves capturing life --taking moments and ideas captive. However, the work I'm most proud of seems to do the exact opposite. It brings an idea to life and sets it free.
Writing is my burden and my relief. As a kid I hated English class. My penmanship was rubbish, and words flowed from me like a hippopotamus down a staircase. My favorite books are the ones with lots of pictures and thick, cardboard pages. Let's just say I was not a natural born writer. Yet, the discipline of writing has added more value to my life than just about anything else. In 2008 I felt compelled to start a journal, and I've been writing every day since.
Maybe I should say I try to make sense of things. Nevertheless I wanted to keep the "I make" theme going, so let's not get too hung up on semantics. Anyway, I love to teach! I've always admired those who can clearly communicate ideas with humility, and it's my hope to do the same. Whether through blogging, leading workshops, or simply doing life with friends I enjoy sharing my journey with anyone eager to listen.
